Students Want to Know: Elana Johnson

My students and I are big, big fans of the dystopian genre, so we’re very excited that Elana signed up for Students Want to Know.  Possession is a very cool addition to the genre.  We were fortunate enough to receive an ARC and it’s been passed around my class quite a bit already 🙂  Thank you for taking the time to do this, Elana!

Summary of Possession (From Goodreads): Vi knows the Rule: Girls don’t walk with boys, and they never even think about kissing them. But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn…and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi’s future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself.

But the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they’re set on convincing Vi to become one of them…starting by brainwashing Zenn. Vi can’t leave Zenn in the Thinkers’ hands, but she’s wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous–everything Zenn’s not. Vi can’t quite trust Jag and can’t quite resist him, but she also can’t give up on Zenn.

This is a game of control or be controlled. And Vi has no choice but to play.

  • Which character do you relate to the most- Vi or Jag?
Oh, definitely Vi.  Girl power and all that.
  • Have you ever considered drawing the characters out?
Dude, I can’t even draw a circle.  So no.  But I do imagine all my stories and characters as cartoons.
  • I love the cover!  Do you know what they had in mind while designing it?
I do! My editor had the art department read it, of course.  And she said she directed them to do something “haunting, yet beautiful.”  The butterfly in ice is what they came up with.
  • Will you write another book like this one?
Definitely! I’ve already written the companion novel.  It takes place in the same story world, but has two different narrating characters.

Comments from Cerrah:  I love the suspense and the storyline.  I like the way you described the characters.  Violet sounds very cool—love her and Jag’s hair!  I actually could make a movie in my head.  I love books like that. (THANK YOU!)

  • What’s changed or how has the future changed to where girls aren’t allowed to walk with or kiss boys?
In POSSESSION, Thinkers control the population through paranormal means.  Subjects link in to brainwashing messages each night, and therefore don’t get to decide where they go, who they’re with, what they where, or who they kiss.
  • How do you become a “Thinker”?  What is their purpose?
Thinkers are people who are gifted with mind reading and controlling abilities.  It’s a paranormal phenomenon  that drives the world into an apocalypse.

I love comments!
